Mother's Brewing Company
Knowing that thousands of people enjoy a product of your art form is incredible fulfilling. For Chris Courtney and Reed Effland, their hard work pays off when people taste their beer.
Chris and Reed both work at Mother’s Brewing Company in Springfield, MO. Chris is the head brewer, and Reed is the quality control manager.
As a self-proclaimed “craft beer nerd,” Chris began homebrewing for a year and a half before making beer his full-time career. He isn’t a painter or singer, but he’s an artist who makes his own recipes. Brewing is his livelihood and creative outlet. He joined Mother’s in June of 2021.
“I love that it's a blend of art and science,” says Chris. “It's got the structure of science, and then it's got a really cool art aspect to it.”
Reed is a chemist. He started his career in pharmaceuticals, shifting industries and beginning at Mother’s in November of 2021. Now, he sees chemistry in every step of the brewing process, from yeast counting to centrifuging, and each beer brings something unique to the table.
“Everybody will taste something different when they taste a beer,” says Reed. “Those flavors and intricacies of the beer come out as memories from their past or in the current memories they're making.”
Family is the reason both Chris and Reed show up every day.
“Work takes a lot out of me,” Chris says, “but it’s something that I’m able to provide for my family, my son and my wife.”
“I want to instill the hard work and dedication that I have and grew up with into my little girls,” says Reed. “Teach them that you don’t have to rely on somebody. You can get out there, and you can do it yourself.”
